Royal Wedding 皇家婚礼
On the 9 th of April, 2005 Prince Charles finally married Camilla Parker Bowles, more than thirty years after the couple first formed a relationship.
In contrast to Charles's 1981 wedding to Lady Diana Spencer, during which more than six hundred thousand well-wishers lined the streets of London , the civil ceremony was a private, low-key affair attended by only a handful of guests.
What had changed in the twenty years between the two weddings?
The 1980s and 1990s heralded a difficult period of change for the British Royal Family. Until that time the private lives of the Royals were covered discreetly by the British press. However, UK and international media interest in Diana was unprecedented . The ‘People's Princess', as she was dubbed , became the world's most photographed woman and her marriage came under close scrutiny .
Despite the fairy-tale wedding , the marriage soon began to disintegrate amid rumours of infidelity , eating disorders and suicide attempts.
The couple divorced in 1996 having separately given television interviews in which they confessed their past infidelities. Public sympathy and press opinion favoured Diana who was seen as the innocent victim of royal coldness and manipulation. Charles, on the other hand, was portrayed as an unfaithful husband . Both the public and the media became increasingly critical of Britain 's Royal Family.
Yet eight years after Diana's death, it appears that Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles may have been forgiven. The days of scandal and outrage seem long ago now. Indeed, one respected royal affairs journalist has described the couple as being ‘like a pair of comfy old slippers'.
