The Global Film Industry - 电影业
When Auguste and Louis Lumière presented the first public screening of a film in the Grand Café on the Boulevard des Capucines in Paris in December 1895, they could not have imagined that their invention would become one of the most important media of the twenty-first century.
Fast forward to the present day and more than three thousand films are produced each year. It is estimated that annual revenue from film production will be $450 billion in 2005. Hollywood films account for the lion's share of this figure – around 35% of total industry revenue.
Despite being the biggest earner in the film industry, Hollywood is not the most prolific in terms of output. The Indian film industry, known as‘Bollywood', produces nearly one thousand films each year.
Asian cinema has become increasingly popular in the West in recent years.
Films like Ang Lee's‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon' and Zhang Yimou's‘House of Flying Daggers' have helped to raise the profile of Chinese cinema in the UK.
Studies show that cinema attendance in China is also on the up . In 2004 box office sales increased to $180 million.
