Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA) was established on December 6, 1984 with the approval of the State Council of the People's Republic of China. It is one of the first state-class economic-technological development areas in the country.

Created 20 years ago with the approval of the Chinese central government, Tianjin Economic-technological Development Area (TEDA) is one of the first state-level coastal development areas opening to the outside world.

Since year 1997, the Ministry of Commerce, the previous Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (MOFTEC), has been evaluating each year state-level development areas from the following six perspectives: overall economic strength, infrastructure, operating cost, human resources support, environment and technological innovations.The results of these evaluations indicate that these main economic indicators of TEDA of the past few years remain the highest among those of the other 48 development areas of its kind in the country.
