The total area of Dagang is 1113.8 square kilometers with a population of 400,000. Located in the southeast part of Tianjin, Dagang lies in the middle of the economic area around the Bohai Bay which is the nuclear area of the Northeast Asian sub-economic zone. Dagang is one of the focus bases of petrochemical development in China and an important part of Tianjin Coastal New Area.

The national highway No.205 and Ligang railway go through the district. Danla and Jinjin expressways are connected with Jingang highway.
