(Tianjin Daily)¡®No.1 Zhongtie Bohai¡¯, deadweight of 9000 tons, launched smoothly, settling the basis for ¡®railway on the sea¡¯ from Yantai to Dalian. It also made it possible to operate China¡¯s first over hundred kilometers¡¯ railway ferry. Lu Dongfu, vice-minister of communications department, cut the ribbon at the launch ceremony. Many officials from Tianjin, Yantai and Dalian also attended the ceremony.
The distance on the sea from Yantai to Dalian is only 159.8 kilometers. But now the railway distance is 1801 kilometers. It increases the transportation cost and also prolongs transportation time. So it is quite necessary to build a land-sea railway channel in east China. After ¡®No.1 Zhongtie Bohai¡¯ is put into operation, it will greatly ease the north-south railways transportation strain.
The ¡®No.1 Zhongtie Bohai¡¯ railway ferryboat uses world¡¯s newest shipping technology, with the length of 182.60 meters, width of 24.8 meters, sea gauge of 5.8 meters, speed of 18 sea miles. ¡®No. 1 Zhongtie Bohai¡¯ will be debugged in Dalian in the late May.
