Men's Olympic soccer game to kick off in town


THE Men's Olympic Football Tournament is expected to kick off in Shanghai on August 7, 2008 and culminate at Beijing's National Stadium on August 23, according to the Federation Internationale De Football Association, which convened yesterday in Zurich, Switzerland.

Meanwhile, the women's competition will start in Tianjin a day before and its final will be played at the Worker's Stadium in Beijing on August 21, the FIFA Organizing Committee said.

The 58 matches of the men's and women's tournaments will be shared among five cities C Beijing, Qinhuangdao, Shanghai, Shenyang and Tianjin.

For runners-up of Africa and South America in their respective women's qualifying competitions, there is a planned play-off C a single match held in China -- which is scheduled to take place in April 2008, for the last seat of the women's Olympic tournament.

Having lost the final of the 2006 Women's South American Championship to Argentina, Brazil will represent South America in the match.
