In the morning of December 6, the journalists were approved to enter the locale of the Airbus 320 Tianjin FAL Project, which were listed as one of the 20 Key Industrial Project of Tianjin. The safeguard work on the site is strict, and any person is not allowed to enter the site without the required approval, except the builders, and video-making equipment is especially forbidden.

“The frame structure of the FAL hangar has been finished. The outside wall is being constructing. Soon, the inner decoration and installation of equipment will be started. At that time, there will be more examination and approval procedures for the interview.” As Mr. Yin said these, a friendly smile was shown on his face.

Standing on the FAL hangar, the journalists saw that the steel structure was shining under the sunshine and the workers were installing the yellow rock cotton heat preservation materials on the lifters for the outside walls. At that time, a roaring sound transferred from the sky and an airplane, which just took off from Binhai International Airport, passed through the sky on the head of the FAL hangar. What a splendid scene!

It can be imagined that, in June of 2009, the first Airbus 320 airplane, which is assembled in Tianjin, will take off here to many countries of the world, with the dream of our nation and the mission of Tianjin.

“At present, the construction with the fastest process should be the FAL hangar. Look, behind me, there is the Painting Workshop and the Power station, both of which is in their primary construction period. What is on the left of the hangar are the Final Assembly Line and the Maintaining Workshop, which are being piled. On the right, it is the Logistics Center, and the construction of the pile caps has been completely finished. There is a Warehouse for Big Components in the front of the FAL hangar, and the hoisting work of the steel structure has been finished, too.” Yin Wujun said.It is busy in the locale of the construction, and tens of lifters works together to transfer the building materials; about a thousand of works of different types works at the same time, and sparks generated when welding keep on spattering. Gao Peng, the Manager of the Airbus 320 Tianjin FAL Project, said, “Comparing with the construction of other industrial buildings, the process of the underground construction of the airplane assembly hangar is more complicated.” High and low buildings strew at random on the site, so that it looks like a big labyrinth. It is leant from Gao Peng that, in the next year, the Airbus 320 airplanes will be sent here for painting after the final assembly. He also said, “This is the most difficult project among all the sub-projects of the FAL project. The difficulties come from the both the civil construction and the installation of steel structure. Totally 1106 pickets will be needed for constructing the Painting Workshop, and the pickets are of 72 kinds of shapes. Besides, the diameter and the elevation of the pickets are different with each other. The result from any mistake when making the pickets will be serious.”

Chen Yongsheng, Deputy Director of the office for construction of Tianjin Airport Industrial Park, is the busiest person on the site. He was attending the meetings for the whole morning of December 6, and was busy in communicating and coordinating with mangers of each sub-project, so that he just had a short time to accept the interview at noon. It is known from him that the project is implemented after the redesign made by the construction unit on base of the German design. Since many techniques in the construction are of both Chinese and Western styles and the complicated assembly process of big airplanes, the difficulties of the project can be predicted.

Mr. Chen said, after being transferred to the warehouse from Germany by ship, the components of the airplanes would be delivered into the core area for assemble the airplanes—the FAL hangar. Then, the airplanes being assembled will be painted in the Painting Workshop. For the third step, the airplanes will be delivered into the Power Station to be installed with engines. For the forth step, they will sliding to the Final Assembly Line and the Maintaining Workshop by themselves for systematic test of the each component. For the fifth step, they will be delivered to the Weight hangar so as to find out the center of gravity of them. And for the sixth step, they will be delivered to the Delivery Center. The whole process needs a time of about several months. Mr. Chen confirmedly said that, “By the end of this year, the construction of the buildings on the ground of part of the sub-project will be processed into a state of ′being able to resist the wind and rain‵, so that the assembly of the next year the test flight in the year after next can be processed on time.”

Zhang Aiguo, the Deputy Director of the Administration Committee of Tianjin Port Free Trade Zone and Team Leader of the Preparation Team for the infrastructure construction of the FAL project, said that, “Generally speaking, the assemble of a large airplane needs millions of components, so the assembly needs the supports from a lager group of industries related to it. In 2008, when the FAL Project for the Airbus 320 series is finished and put into operation”, the extended industrial chain will attract more enterprises that deals with airplane developing, manufacture of components as well as sales and service providing, meanwhile the regional communication, metal manufacture and other relevant industries will be developed.” He also said, “At present, many national and international enterprises related to aviation industry have invested in Tianjin, the development of the airport-based industry has been shown a wide prospect and a good tendency.”

It is known that, by emphasized development of the industries including the air transportation, processing and logistics, education and training of civil aviation, development and industrialization, manufacture and maintaining of aviation equipment, 11 aviation enterprises have invested in the Tianjin Airport Industrial Park. In addition, more than 30 aviation projects are in negotiation, among which, 10 projects are special associated projects of Airbus. Meanwhile, many national and foreign leading enterprises in the aviation industry have come here for investigations, and the businesses involving in many fields, such as manufacture of components for aviation, air transportation and logistics, and related services. It is not hard to see that, the primary agglomeration effect of the aviation industry has been formed.

In the place where is Airbus 320 Tianjin FAL Project locates, a modernized “Aviation City” is rising up. It integrated many functions together, including the airplane assembly work, aviation bonded port and logistics, science and technology research of aviation and industrialization, high-tech manufacture, finance and trade exhibition, maintenance of aviation equipment, education, training and research of aviation, as well as ecological residence and tourism service. Besides, the only national industrial base of civil aviation is also located in this area.
