Tianjin University buys plane to fly directly from Sanya to Tianjin with flight number specially approved by aviation authority

Recently, a McDonnell Douglas (MD) airplane with over 100 seats landed at the Tianjin Binhai International Airport. This airliner, with over 10 years of service, has changed its identity, becoming Tianjin University’s platform for teaching and scientific research and carrying out various scientific research tasks in the aerospace field. Tianjin University has also become the first non-aviation university to purchase a jumbo jet.

Zhu Neng, Deputy Dean of the Tianjin University School of Environmental Science and Engineering, took part in the entire plane purchasing process. He told the reporters that Tianjin University’s decision to spend over 10 million yuan to buy the McDonnell Douglas 82 jet was made after careful consideration. Qingyan Chen, a Purdue University professor, has been working as a visiting chair professor under the “Chang Jiang Scholar” Program in Tianjin University in recent years. He is also the director of a world class research center for cabin environment for US commercial jets, which has been conducting joint research on cabin environment control with seven universities in the US. The Tianjin University School of Environmental Science and Engineering is leading China’s research in areas such as in-flight environment and air purification technology. Therefore, the University will attach great significance to the research headed by Professor Chen in order to achieve breakthroughs in the field. In order to simulate a scientific research platform for cabin environments, Professor Chen negotiated with foreign businesses including FedEx and Northwest Airlines, but had to give up the plan to purchase a plane from overseas due to legal proceedings and transportation difficulties. However, seeing as civil aviation authorities in China require all MD jets with high oil consumption to be withdrawn from the aviation market before March 20, 2009, China Southern Airlines decided to sell its 12 MD jets. Upon hearing the news, Tianjin University contacted the airline to make the purchase. It also invited three Boeing experts to evaluate and certify the jet. Although the MD jets have the shortcoming of high oil consumption, there are nearly 800 MD jets currently still in operation, and the MD 82 is in the same league as the Boeing 737 and the Airbus 320.
