Heavy-duty carrier rocket base able to launch equivalent of two rockets will be built by 2012
enorth.com.cn   2009-04-17 12:05

(Enorth.com.cn)"At present, all workers have sped up construction to make sure that initial stages of the entire base will be established by the end of 2010.” At the construction site of the new-generation carrier rocket base in the western district of the Tianjin Development Zone, Liu Chao, Deputy Chief Commander of the Construction Command Department, said that "By 2012, the base will be equipped with a capacity enabling it to launch the equivalent of two rockets."

First factory building to be ready for equipment installation at the end of April

At the site of the new-generation carrier rocket industrialization base, nearly 1,000 workers are busy installing interior furnishings inside the base's first factory building, which will be used for welding and assembly of storage tanks.

“After completion, the site, commonly referred to as the place where rocket fuel tanks are manufactured, will be ready for equipment installation by the end of April.” Liu revealed to reporters that the entire base will follow the principle of “putting into operation while being constructed,” and after completion of the 200,000-square-meter phase-one project, all research and manufacturing functions, ranging from component manufacturing and general assembly to testing, will be ready.

In addition, he noted that in order to speed up the construction of the base, all civil engineering for projects, including the final assembly plant, the testing plant as well as the synthetic material plant, will be started within the year. By the end of this year, all large-scale equipment will be in place inside the plants.

The “shaking test” tower used for airborne simulation tests of heavy-duty carrier rockets will be completed during the final stage of construction. By 2012, the base will be capable of launching the equivalent of two heavy-duty carrier rockets.

China’s “new generation” carrier rockets will be launched without polluting

Reporters learned that China’s “Long March” series of carrier rockets consists of four major categories, the “Long March 1,” “Long March 2,” “Long March 3,” and “Long March 4” carrier rocket products.

The new generation of carrier rockets is also referred to as the “Long March 5." In view of factors such as environmental protection and launch safety, in addition to enhancing carrying capacity, the new generation of rockets has a large diameter, large thrust, high reliability, low cost and causes no pollution.

Liu said that through innovation, there has been considerable improvement to the engine of the Long March 5. The rocket will be equipped with a liquid oxygen and kerosene engine for the first time and will be able to carry out a poison-free and pollution-free launch.

According to the plan, the Long March 5 carrier rocket will make its first launch in 2014. With regard to the current conceptual phase, all-round breakthroughs in each key technology have been made. The project will enter the prototype research and development stage in the near future.

Base to be located in Binhai New Area, highlighting importance of Tianjin

Reporters learned that seeing as the Long March 5 is five meters in diameter, it is difficult to transport to the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center or the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center by railway or highway. Therefore, a clear advantage of choosing Tianjin as the construction site is convenience in transportation.

"All complicated conditions that may occur during flight must be tested on the ground in advance. After passing tests, the large rocket will be transported to Tianjin Port on special vehicles along the Yangbei Highway, and then shipped to the Hainan-based Wenchang Satellite Launch Center, which is under construction, via waterway," said Liu.

The new generation carrier rocket industrialization base project is a national key program set forth in the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan." After completion, it will help accelerate the development and opening up of the Binhai New Area, will improve the development of high-tech industries, and will enhance Tianjin's industry structure and development.
