US Secretary of Energy Steven Chu to visit Tianjin University

US Secretary of Energy Steven Chu will visit Tianjin University on Friday and deliver a speech on “Energy and Climate: Common Challenges and Common Opportunities” to students.

Steven Chu is a co-winner of Nobel Prize in Physics in 1997 for the "development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light".

During his visit to Tianjin University, he will discuss issues concerning clean energy, energy efficiency and new energy technologies with Gong Ke, President of the University, and other experts of chemical engineering and Smart Grids.

Chu has been a vocal advocate for more research into alternative energy and nuclear power, arguing that a shift away from fossil fuels is essential to combat global warming.

Chu also has a historical connection with the University. His maternal grandfather graduated from Peiyang University (renamed Tianjin University in 1951) and served as President of the University from 1932 to 1938.

Steven began his first trip to China as US Secretary of Energy with fellow Chinese American, Secretary of Commerce, Gary Locke on Tuesday.

On January 21, 2009, Chu was sworn in as Secretary of Energy in the Barack Obama administration. Chu is the first person appointed to the Cabinet after having won a Nobel Prize. He is also the second Chinese American to be a member of the Cabinet after Elaine Chao.
